SUMMARY:Leeds Eurowalk
DESCRIPTION:Leeds for Europe is celebrating our close commercial\, family and intellectual links with our neighbours across the North Sea by creating a series of four online self-guided walking routes through the city – Leeds Eurowalks. These are not strenuous hikes\, rather gentle strolls through the outskirts\, suburbs and centre of the city. \nEach walk discovers various aspects of the city’s architectural and cultural heritage\, stressing links with mainland European people and ideas that have helped to build Leeds into a truly European city. The walks include a route between Chapel Allerton and Roundhay Park\, from the Fulneck Moravian settlement in Pudsey to Headingley\, from Leeds University to the Grand Theatre and from there to Leeds Market\, the Royal Armouries and Tower Works. \nThe Leeds Eurowalks will be formally launched in Millennium Square on Sunday 30 July at 11am with a public walk of around 2km (1½ miles) through the city ending at the Royal Armouries. \nAll are welcome and there is no charge for joining this launch event. \nThere will be several guests of honour on this inaugural walk\, including Geoff Tranter\, chair of the Dortmund Anglo-German Society. Making a rare visit to his native city of Leeds\, Tranter is a well-known lecturer and teacher who has lived in Leeds’ German twin city of Dortmund for nearly 50 years. He has done much to cement close relationships between the two cities of Leeds and Dortmund and their wider regions of Yorkshire and Nordrhein-Westfalen over those years and is back in Leeds to meet family and friends and to celebrate his 80th birthday. \nAll of these walks are downloadable free of charge at https://leedseurowalks.co.uk/

SUMMARY:Les Panards Dansants\, Todmorden
DESCRIPTION:The Festival des Panards Dansants is returning with an impressive line-up for a special celebration of French and Breton music and dance. The Festival will take place from the 7th until 9th October 2022 in Todmorden\, Yorkshire. \n \nThe good news is that Todmorden Town Hall has taken advantage from months of closure to have its acoustics hugely improved thanks to the fitting of special panels.  \nOn the programme\, we are really excited to welcome the amazing DUO PICHARD-VINCENDEAU from Brittany with their exciting combination of melodeon and hurdy-gurdy. Well known in Brittany\, this duo is going from strength to strength\, and it is a privilege to have them coming up north and play for us. They will also run Breton ensemble\, melodeon\, and hurdy gurdy workshops. \nWe are welcoming back another impressive duo: PHILIPPE PLARD and MARK PRESCOTT who astounded us with their talent and energy in 2016. \nThey will run several workshops too\, including bourrées\, violin and melodeon. \n \n The EEL GRINDERS TRIO (Steve Turner\, Helena Torpy and Dave Faulkner) are also making a welcome return. Festival favourites since 2000! Steve and Helena will also perform as a duo. \n As usual there will be an array of dance and music workshops to suit all abilities\, led by top tutors. To name but a few: Kerry Fletcher (French dance)\, Dave Faulkner (ensemble and bagpipe)\, Peter Clifton (Breton dance)\, and Paul Sherwood (hurdy gurdy beginners). \nArtists\, workshops information and booking form available on our website. \nwww.frenchdanceleeds.co.uk \nWeekend Ticket (all inclusive): £52 Friday Bal: £12 / Saturday Bal: £12 Each Workshop: £10\nSunday session: £5 \nBook Tickets \nFREE for children 16 and under

SUMMARY:York Music Event
DESCRIPTION:York for Europe has organised a musical event in celebration of our links with our twin cities of Muenster and Dijon. The event is part of the nationwide Festival of Europe. Historically\, artistic and creative links between European countries have been important for cultural and economic development across the continent. \nWe asked our twin cities to invite local groups to record some music of their choice and then gifted it to the other cities as a video present. Both Dijon and Munster have contributed. In York\, five local musical groups enthusiastically took part. We hoped the result would be an interesting mix of musical types and so it has turned out. We are now making a video compilation of all the musical ‘presents’ produced by each of the three cities. \nFrom the 15 pieces of music we have gifted each other\, there is something for everyone – choral groups\, a big band\, a jazz quartet\, a ukelele band and music school productions who between them are covering an intriguing mixture of small and large ensembles playing a variety of classical and contemporary music. \nIn York\, you’ll be able to hear the music in St Helen’s Square on Sunday 25th September between 14.00 and 16.00. Some of the local music groups who contributed will be playing live. \nCome for as much time as you would like from 14.00 onwards. We expect to finish at 16.00 latest. We look forward to seeing you for an enjoyable celebration of our European links. Special thanks to our twin cities for joining in.

SUMMARY:The French in London Walk (London)
DESCRIPTION:London is marked by a long history of the social\, cultural\, political and economic presence of the French and they have contributed in multiple ways to the life of the city. The capital has\, for example\, often provided a place of refuge\, from the Huguenots in the 17th century\, through the period of the French revolution\, to various exile communities during the 19th century\, and on to the Free French in the Second World War. London has also provided a place of opportunity. New generations of French citizens settled in post-war London\, not least the hundreds of thousands of French (and Francophone) people who have made London their home in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. These walks trace the impact that the French have had historically\, and continue to have\, on London life manifested in diverse places and institutions from the religious to the political\, from the artistic to the commercial\, from the gastronomic to the educational. \nThe walk is lead by Caroline Tollemache\, Blue Badge Guide. \nMeet at 2:30 PM  BST The Courtyard of Somerset House\, Walking time 2 hours.

SUMMARY:Euro Walk (Brighton & Hove)
DESCRIPTION:Brighton & Hove Euro Walk \nThis is a 90 minute walk through Brighton & Hove;  a city with a long history of European connections. The walk guides participants through streets of this European-facing coastal community.  The economic importance of its early history in long distance fishing and export of dried and smoked fish as far south as the Mediterranean is explored.  Participants hear about 16th century French attacks along the south coast which culminated in 1514 with Brighton being burnt down by a large French fleet. We find out about the Flemish refugee brewer Deryck Carver and his fiery death\, whose commemorative plaque is in Black Lion Street. In more peaceful times Brighton has been host to a large ex-patriate European community\, from the Hanoverian monarchs down to a sizeable Italian ice-cream making community and a host of German musicians\, French hotel staff and refugee Jewish traders\, and in summer scores of young European students at language schools. \nThe walk is led by local geographer Dr Geoffrey Mead \nWhere? Meet outside the entrance to the Brighton Museum in the Pavilion Gardens\, Brighton \nWhen? 18th June\, 11am to 12.30 pm \nTickets £6 per person \nPhoto by Ray Harrington on Unsplash
