SUMMARY:The French in London Walk (London)
DESCRIPTION:London is marked by a long history of the social\, cultural\, political and economic presence of the French and they have contributed in multiple ways to the life of the city. The capital has\, for example\, often provided a place of refuge\, from the Huguenots in the 17th century\, through the period of the French revolution\, to various exile communities during the 19th century\, and on to the Free French in the Second World War. London has also provided a place of opportunity. New generations of French citizens settled in post-war London\, not least the hundreds of thousands of French (and Francophone) people who have made London their home in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. These walks trace the impact that the French have had historically\, and continue to have\, on London life manifested in diverse places and institutions from the religious to the political\, from the artistic to the commercial\, from the gastronomic to the educational. \nThe walk is lead by Caroline Tollemache\, Blue Badge Guide. \nMeet at 2:30 PM  BST The Courtyard of Somerset House\, Walking time 2 hours.

SUMMARY:Rapsquillion Shanty Singing (Middlewich Folk/Boat Festival)
DESCRIPTION:The Festival of Europe shanty project highlights our shared European history of centuries of seafaring trade and migration. There is no better way to encapsulate this than at Middlewich Folk and Boat Festival\, through the rich vocal harmonies of Rapsquillion and the sight of Salty Sam and his lifeboat near the canalside fundraising for the Royal National Lifeboat Institute (RNLI). \nRapsquillion hang around on street corners with attitude\, wearing red and hurling four-part harmonies at unsuspecting passers-by. SUMMARY:Euro Walk (Brighton & Hove)
DESCRIPTION:Brighton & Hove Euro Walk \nThis is a 90 minute walk through Brighton & Hove;  a city with a long history of European connections. The walk guides participants through streets of this European-facing coastal community.  The economic importance of its early history in long distance fishing and export of dried and smoked fish as far south as the Mediterranean is explored.  Participants hear about 16th century French attacks along the south coast which culminated in 1514 with Brighton being burnt down by a large French fleet. We find out about the Flemish refugee brewer Deryck Carver and his fiery death\, whose commemorative plaque is in Black Lion Street. In more peaceful times Brighton has been host to a large ex-patriate European community\, from the Hanoverian monarchs down to a sizeable Italian ice-cream making community and a host of German musicians\, French hotel staff and refugee Jewish traders\, and in summer scores of young European students at language schools. \nThe walk is led by local geographer Dr Geoffrey Mead \nWhere? Meet outside the entrance to the Brighton Museum in the Pavilion Gardens\, Brighton \nWhen? 18th June\, 11am to 12.30 pm \nTickets £6 per person \nPhoto by Ray Harrington on Unsplash

SUMMARY:Doggerland\, a performance about boundaries (Brighton Fringe)
DESCRIPTION:A performance about boundaries\, real and imaginary\, and how they shape our experience of being human. It explores the arbitrary notion of political borders\, the implications of ecological barriers\, the threshold of our inner world and the porous nature of skin. The performance takes the form of an absurd lecture/presentation on the history of Doggerland with audience interaction. \nSometimes called Europe’s ‘lost land’ or the lost ‘Atlantis’ of the North Sea\, Doggerland is a submerged land mass that once connected Britain to continental Europe. The existence of Doggerland was first suggested in a late 19th-century book A Story of the Stone Age by H.G. Wells\, set in a prehistoric region where it would have been possible to walk from Europe to Britain.

SUMMARY:Language Acts! What Are Our Values? (Glasgow)
DESCRIPTION:A community workshop building on Language Acts and Worldmaking’s exploration of how and why the languages we use shape our world and our lives\, its reflection on languages as a ‘hospitable space’ and the Festival and Summer of Europe’s celebration of ‘the shared values and cultures of all those who call Europe home’. \nFacilitator Debra Kelly\, Professor Emerita University of Westminster; Visiting Senior Research Fellow Centre for Language Acts and Worldmaking\, King’s College London; Festival of Europe CIC; with the UNESCO RILA\, University of Glasgow (https://www.gla.ac.uk/research/az/unesco/) \nWe’re honoured that the Festival of Europe’s values have been taken as the theme for this year’s UNESCO RILA Spring School in Glasgow. This workshop asks one of the questions both organisations share: ‘What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you think about your own values and how they shape your identity or identities?’ and creates a space to discuss\, exchange and act on ‘our values’.

SUMMARY:Premier of Doggerland\, a performance about boundaries
